When Jan and Dean ( look them up) wrote and recorded their sidewalk surfin’ classic in 1964 one of them ran alongside the other with a microphone and a tape recorder (long since been replaced by the CD and  mp3s) recording the sound of the wheels gliding on the pavement. Some of the lyrics are

Believe it or not I was riding my vintage board (then brand new and made by me) and it looked almost identical to the one pictured. You want to ride a board with no control and one that slides sideways just find an old homemade vintage board and give it a shot. I remember riding down our driveway and attempting to make the turn onto the side walk without catching the grass and flying palm first towards the road. Helmets, pads, padded shorts I don’t think so just the feel of the gravel embedded in the driveway or sidewalk digging into your skin. We had a blast. Of course it was not long before the clay wheels of indoor roller skates made their way onto the decks making for a little bit easier and smoother ride.

Of course now with the fancy decks, multiple ball bearing wheels and intricate trucks handling has improved tremendously.
